Policy implementation in the Context of Environmental Degradation, Insecurity and Poverty: The Case of Niger Delta Region, Nigeria

Until the discovery of crude oil in Nigeria, economy country relied on Agriculture for sustenance. Upon this discovery, sector started an economic domination Nigeria leading to neglect Agriculture. Since extraction and production takes place Niger Delta, region is bedevilled by ills caused reckless exploration activities. This led emergence artisanal refining as a coping strategy. Though with its attendant socio-economic benefits, loss national was huge. Artisanal also destroys environment traditional livelihoods. The consequent decline revenue earnings government implement existing policy halt theft. Thus, objective study identify environmental effects government’s implementation Delta region. conducted six communities three states namely; Oruma, Aguobiri (Bayelsa State), Ido, Bille (Rivers Egwa 1 Tebujoh (Delta State). adopted cross-sectional survey research design comprising 400 randomly selected respondents out which 314 participants responded. findings indicate that policies geared towards addressing problem theft exacerbates environmental, livelihood security problems further pauperization, poverty insecurity.
